Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about training at Longhouse

Getting Started

Do I need experience to start jiu jitsu?

No prior experience is required. Our classes in Grand Blanc welcome complete beginners. We'll teach you everything from the ground up with patient, expert instruction from our black belt instructors. Most of our members started with zero martial arts background.

What should I wear to my first class?

For no-gi classes, wear athletic shorts (no pockets or zippers) and a fitted t-shirt or rash guard. For gi classes, we have loaner gis available for your trial. Our pro shop also sells gear if you decide to continue training.

How do I claim my free trial class?

Simply fill out the form on our contact page, call us at (910) 705-9910, or stop by the gym at 12793 S Saginaw St in Grand Blanc. We'll get you scheduled for a class that fits your schedule.

Am I too old/young/out of shape to start?

Jiu jitsu is for everyone. We have members ranging from 5 to 60+ years old, and all fitness levels. The beauty of jiu jitsu is that technique overcomes strength and athleticism. You'll get in shape AS you train, not before.

What should I expect in my first class?

You'll be welcomed by our staff and partnered with an experienced training partner. The instructor will show techniques at a pace you can follow, and you'll practice with a partner. There's no pressure to spar on your first day.

Training & Classes

What's the difference between no-gi and gi jiu jitsu?

No-gi (submission grappling) is practiced in athletic wear and emphasizes wrestling, speed, and techniques used in MMA and self-defense. Gi jiu jitsu uses the traditional gi, allowing for additional grips like collar chokes and lapel guards. We recommend training both, but our primary focus is no-gi.

How often should I train?

For beginners, we recommend 2-3 classes per week to build a solid foundation while allowing recovery time. As you progress, many students train 4-5 times per week. Consistency matters more than frequency - it's better to train twice a week every week than five times one week and none the next.

Do I have to spar (roll)?

Sparring is optional, especially for beginners. We encourage new students to focus on learning techniques first. When you're ready, you'll start with positional sparring before full rolling. You always have the right to say no or tap out at any time.

What is open mat?

Open mat is supervised free training time for members to practice techniques, drill with partners, and spar at their own pace. It's a great opportunity to work on specific skills and get extra mat time. Instructors are available to answer questions.

Do you have competition teams?

Yes! While competition is never required, we support members who want to test themselves in tournaments. Our instructors have extensive competition experience and provide specialized training for those preparing for events.

Safety & Health

Will I get hurt training jiu jitsu?

Jiu jitsu is one of the safest martial arts because techniques are practiced with control and you can tap out at any time to stop a submission. Minor bumps and bruises are normal, but serious injuries are rare when training with proper technique and respectful partners.

How clean is the facility?

Hygiene is a top priority. Our mats are cleaned and sanitized multiple times daily with hospital-grade disinfectant. We have modern shower facilities, and we ask all members to maintain good personal hygiene including trimmed nails and clean training gear.

Can I train with an injury?

It depends on the injury. Always inform your instructor before class if you're dealing with any injury. Many techniques can be modified, and you can often drill without sparring while recovering. When in doubt, consult your doctor.

Kids Program

Is jiu jitsu safe for kids?

Absolutely. Our kids jiu jitsu program emphasizes safety, discipline, and fun. Children learn anti-bullying techniques, build confidence, and develop coordination in a controlled environment with trained instructors. We use age-appropriate techniques and never allow striking.

What ages do you accept for kids classes?

Our kids program accepts children ages 5-15. We group students by age and skill level to ensure appropriate training partners and instruction. Younger children focus more on games and basic movements, while older kids learn more technical jiu jitsu.

Will jiu jitsu make my child aggressive?

The opposite is usually true. Jiu jitsu teaches discipline, respect, and self-control. Kids learn that their skills are for self-defense only and that walking away is always the first option. Many parents report improved behavior and focus after their children start training.

Can parents watch classes?

Yes! We have a comfortable viewing area called the Mead Hall where parents can watch their children train. We encourage parents to stay for at least the first few classes so children feel comfortable in the new environment.
